Messages and Google Hangouts on High Sierra I updated to High Sierra some time ago and noticed that I was no longer able to use Google Hangouts with the Messages app. Looked around online for a while and discovered that others had a similar issue and it was no longer supported. Hangouts for macOS is a desktop messaging service — a component of the overall communication platform from Google enterprise. Hangouts lets you communicate via interactive text chatting, audio/video calls, SMS delivery and recording of voice messages right from your stationary Mac, MacBook, PC or mobile device (smartphone or tablet). Include all your contacts with group chats for up to 150 people. Say more with status messages, photos, videos, maps, emoji, stickers, and animated GIFs. Turn any conversation into a free group video call with up to 10 contacts. Nov 20, 2017  this worked for me other than i have to login again each time i come back from sleep or restart. Keychain is not remembering the password. In my situation, i have 2 factor auth on my google account and had to set up the 'app password' google account feature for less secure apps to get it to log in. The password i need to use for it to work is that key google generates during that process.

Description of Hangouts for macOS

Jan 30, 2018  I began to figure out what was going on and found out the following. Attempting to download macOS High Sierra from the Mac App Store I found that a small 19 MB version of the “Install macOS High Sierra.app” file downloads to the “Applications” folder, rather than the complete 5.2 GB installer file. That’s the problem. This message appears the first time that a 32-bit app is run under Mojave (macOS 10.14) to alert users that the app will not run under macOS versions 10.15 (Catalina) and beyond. Since 10.15 is likely to be released in September or October 2019, Google needs to have a 64-bit version of GoogleTalkPlugin.app.

If you've been battling to get the video for Google Hangouts to work on Safari I have a workaround for you...

1. Open Hangouts and start your video call. The green light next to the camera should come on. The video won't work at this stage.
2. Now open Photo Booth to activate the camera.
3. Your Hangouts call should now have started the camera and you're good to go!

It's important to do it in the order above, although I've heard of it working for a few in the reverse order.

Of course you'll need all your Safari plug-ins up to date, installed and configured with the right permissions before trying this (a quick search will reveal plenty of sites that'll show you how, see link below to access plug-in downloads).

While this is a win for those of us who need Hangouts on Safari it's not a good enough solution. Put pressure on Apple by reporting the issue at Feedback - Safari - Apple

1. My Hangouts has always worked in Chrome but not Safari (until I tried this workaround)
2. I'm using macOS High Sierra version 10.13.2
3. And also Safari version 11.0.2
4. I've never had a problem with the Hangouts iOS app on my iPhone
5. If the green camera light doesn't come on in Hangouts I'm afraid I don't have a solution for that
